THE theme music from Downton Abbey set the tone for Ralph Lauren's autumn/winter 2012-13 collection, held in a setting with huge crystal chandeliers.

The opening outfits were a homage to traditional British fabric craft, including tweed, Fair Isle, worsted wool and a weave named “Glen plaid”. As if the message needed reiterating we also saw plus fours, jodhpurs and cricket collars.

Well cut and draped cashmere double-breasted overcoats were elegant and a number of fitted checked trouser suits struck a chord - even the matching bowler hats looked chic. A green and blue wool trouser suit would, however, require some panache – and was better teamed with some black velvet jodhpurs and some sensational black suede pumps with gold serpent details in the heels.

A flow of beautifully-tailored black sable dresses followed a long velvet smoking robe worn with wide legged chalk-stripe flannel trousers. Many of the dresses had heavily embellished collars. A polished glove leather, black pleated skirt was a highlight with a black cashmere turtleneck sweater with a gold beading on the front.

Lauren skipped forward a few years to the inter-war period for some gorgeous tulle beaded flapper dresses and a stunning Art Deco gold gown that swaggered rather than flowed because of its weight. A black satin gown worn with an ostrich feather cape of black and gold had Twenties glamour updated and the show finished on a rose gold lame dress with bias pleats in the one-shouldered bodice, which looked striking on Olga Sherer.

AS official jewellery sponsor of the BAFTAs, Osprey has lent jewellery to the likes of Angelina Jolie, Goldie Hawn and Rosamund Pike for the annual awards. We spoke to Loren Craig, head of press and events at Asprey, about preparing some of the industry's most famous faces for the red carpet.

"We make ourselves as flexible as possible, operating from The Savoy Style Suites or arranging appointments in the Asprey flagship store," explained Craig. "We often have nominees arriving with their dresses still on the hanger or with an image so we can use our imagination. The pieces are then set aside and collected in time for them to wear on the night of the awards. Jewellery is often the last accessory to be added to complement the final look, so we often work right up to the last minute!"

And, for Asprey, its key collections are sure to be snapped up first.

"We do have some fantastic new collections this year including a stunning diamond and yellow diamond suite from our iconic Daisy Heritage Collection," said Craig. "Also we've definitely noticed a trend for stacked bracelets, classic jewels and large stud earrings. We have found over the last few years that it is not often a celebrity will wear a whole suite such as a necklace, bracelet, ring and earrings."

Check out the crazy hair pieces that Hair stylist Luke Hersheson and his team fixed onto models' heads at Louise Gray. Some were these big fan shapes, others were vertical columns that stood straight up in the air. The one common thread that ran through both different styles? A bucket load of L'Oreal Infinium hairspray.

ARE brooches having a comeback for autumn/winter 2012-13? If Oscar de la Renta's show yesterday is anything to go by, then the answer is most definitely yes.

Jewelled brooches sat at the base of models' throats, adorned scarves and capes and decorated the satin bands in the models' hair. They even appeared as oversized prints upon dresses, coats and skirts - some embellished with sparkling sequins and beads - giving a sense of opulence to the collection.

And the trend for decadent hair accessories didn't end there - models at Rodarte had their hair scattered with golden stars, whilst at Tory Burch they wore hair bands decorated with neat bows that twinkled in the lights.

Definitely something to look out for in the upcoming shows - or even to invest in now.

EYE liner is to autumn/winter what bright lips are to summer. It's a comforting fail-safe that we all reach for in the winter months to add a sultry spin to our make-up look - and already in the first few days of New York Fashion Week, we have seen the classic use of eye liner being given an autumn/winter 2012-13 update.

Take for example the aerodynamic double swish at Altuzarra by MAC's lead make-up artist for the show, Tom Pecheux, placed as such for a "grunge punk couture" feel. Francelle Daly worked with NARS Cosmetics backstage at 3.1 Philip Lim to create another double whammy of eye liner, but this time one in black and one in hot pink. At Carolina Herrera, MAC make-up artist Diane Kendal dedicated time to tracing a fine line along the upper lashes to define them in such a way that they would look like they are coated in mascara.

So too at Karen Walker, where Clinique global colour artist Jenna Mennard noted the detail and thought which had gone into the fine line traced above the lashes, which was straight across without a winged tip and that stopped at the corner of the eye so as to not be tied into referencing a particular era - making the girls immediately cool and modern.

And then onto Marc Jacobs, the show that sets the standard in beauty trends, where the focus was (take a guess...) a smudged line of black kohl under the lower lashes for a romantic and decadent feel. Simple but so effective. Get in line.

DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD has never been shy to tell us what she thinks of us - whether it's our pointless love of disposable items or the harm we are, however inadvertently, causing the planet - but the latest bug bear on her list is our style, or lack thereof.

"People have never looked so ugly as they do today, regarding their dress," she told journalists yesterday, following her Red Label show in London. "We are so conformist, nobody is thinking. I'm a fashion designer and people think 'what do I know?' but I'm talking about all this disposable crap. So I'm saying buy less, choose well, make it last… In history people dressed much better than we do. If you saw Queen Elizabeth it would be amazing, she came from another planet. She was so attractive in what she was wearing."

And, in an interview over the weekend, it emerged that Stefano Pilati - whose pared-back, classic, tailoring-focused vision for YSL could scarcely be more different from Westwood - agrees with the Dame.

"It's not easy to find elegant women," Pilati told Vice magazine. "There are a few, the majority of whom are old - and there are one or maybe two in the world who created a new style when they were young. Today when I go to New York and survey art and fashion, I see smart women and the level is high. But there's a difference between this and saying a woman is elegant. My idea of elegance - and this refers to women as well as men - is that someone is elegant when he or she shows a good knowledge of what fits them, where you can find naturalness and self-esteem. Not showing off. Elegance is the idea of showing an optimistic depiction of oneself, and to lose oneself in the frivolity of style and fashion. Nowadays nobody gives a shit about being elegant, or chic. If you're doing it, you're doing it for yourself, because it's your way of being. When you're not thinking, "This is fashion," and you're not buying clothes to create statements, you're on the right path."

WHAT models eat is a constant source of debate, so when Jourdan Dunn, Bette Franke and Nyasha Matonhooze opened up about their New York Fashion Week diets we were keen to hear about their food choices.

"You don't get time to nourish yourself so when you do eat you really want good food," said Nyasha Matonhodze, who walked in shows including Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte and Carolina Herrera.

Matonhodze, along with Bette Franke, cited sushi as her fashion week choice, whilst Jourdan Dunn showed her love for fast food.

"Last night I had BonChon Korean fried chicken," she told The New York Magazine, referring to the cult Asian franchise.

London Fashion Week

Erdem took his princess-worthy dresses to the next level this afternoon, adding an edge to his signature feminine floral looks. With Perspex shoes created by fellow London designer Nicholas Kirkwood, highlights included silk cigarette pants with flecks of yellow; and A-line layered lace skirts and dresses with dark blue bodices and leather shoulder detailing.

Ok, so what's new? Well, it's all in the application, with the lip colour being blurred out at the edges for a soft-focus effect.

At Jonathan Saunders, make-up artist Lucia Pieroni worked with the MAC Cosmetics team to create beautiful "stamped on lips" that had a slight Japanese geisha influence. At PPQ make-up artist Katie Hughes chose to emphasise the peak of the cupid's bow to complement the "heart" image that was being etched onto the cheek and on the nails, but left the rest of the lips soft so they instantly became "sexy instead of being too scary and precise".

At both Maria Grachvogel and Nicole Farhi, make-up artists Mel Arter and Petros Petrohilos respectively opted for a burgundy/brown take on red both to pick up the colours in the collection and because, explained Mel, "it's a more androgynous take on red."

Sunscreens are not only important in summers but in winters too. A good base of sunscreen having SPF 15 protection can save your delicate skin under eyes from getting killer wrinkles. 1. Avoid wearing too much

Makeup is meant to enhance features not bring negative attention to you. That’s what wearing too much makeup will do; it will bring you unwanted attention. Don’t wear too much of anything such as:

1. Eyeliner: dark, thick eyeliner will make you look overdone and will ruin the rest of your makeup.

2. Mascara: too much mascara looks fake and will flake. It looks especially bad if worn with thick eyeliner or dark blue eye eye shadow.

3. Foundation: Make sure your foundation is the same color as your skin. Foundation is meant to protect and give the face a smooth look. The magic word is blend.

4. Powder: The same holds true for powder – not too much. Also, be sure to blend your makeup so there are no obvious lines.

2. Lips

Apply lip liner to completely cover the lips, add color and your lipstick will stay on much longer. Make sure your lip liner doesn’t show. Also, your lip color should match your skin tone; wear cool colors if you have cool coloring and warm colors if you have warm coloring. If you want to make your lips look smaller, keep your liner on the inside of your lips. However, if you decide to make your lips look larger, going outside the natural outline of you lips is a mistake. This can look quite messy and unnatural.

Then be sure to wear loose powder, keeping pressed powder with you for touch ups.

Your hair color should also be in harmony with your skin. If you have dark hair and you want to add color, keep it close to the same shade. If you have light hair, use light colors. As you age your skin will lighten, so should your hair color. One last thing about hair color – if you do color you hair be sure you keep it up, don’t let your roots show.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) which has focused on creating livelihood opportunities for local fashion labels and designers has collaborated this year with five retailers to create a designer retailer programme. This is in addition to the international multi-brand fashion retailers. This fashion design retail programme will provide Sri Lankan designers the much needed exposure, and opportunity to expand their retail presence, and business growth in Sri Lanka. This initiative will go a long way in creating a sustainable local fashion design industry.

This year “TRUNK”, “Cantaloupe Boutique”, “Aakshii”, “Melaché”, and “Cotton Collection” have collaborated with CFW with regards to the local retailer programme. These five established retailers will provide Sri Lankan designers the necessary infrastructure as well as customer base, to market and sell their designs. This would mean post-Colombo Fashion Week, fashion fans would be able to immediately head to one of these retailers to purchase items from the collection shown.

TRUNK has two outlets, where the service is offered; one is located in the lobby of Cinnamon Grand Hotel and the other in the charming shopping promenade at the historic Galle Face Hotel. TRUNK is also available at ODEL on Alexandra Place, Colombo 7. With more than 15 designers, TRUNK features a wide variety of clothing, shoes and accessories. The boutique’s brands mix funky and hip trends with a classic and timeless style that entices the shopper, and reveals their inner femininity, and helps them pair clothes and accessories to form a unique style they can call their own.

Melaché is the first Sri Lankan fashion boutique that houses the best new Sri Lankan brands under one roof. This store was created as a platform for local designers to commercially retail their collections, and to introduce the concept of wearing “Sri Lankan designer wear” to the community.

Melaché has the pride in dealing with the best exclusive designers in the country in order to understand their creative passions and their personal style. Most designers are the products of Colombo Fashion Week, which has been a highly supportive event for this store and its concept.

In December 2011, Cotton Collection launched its flagship store at #143 Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 7. The Cotton Collection brand embodies the spirit of casual fashion; therefore their clothing is mainly voile, cotton, organic cotton and linen based. Far from being just a glamorous fashion show, HSBC’s CFW aim has been — from the start, to raise the standards of the local designers — to insist that international standards be adhered to. Having worked on this ethos for over 9 years, the consumers are now showing the change as we currently see a trend where locally designed clothing are very sort after. This trend has indicated an increase in home-grown labels, changing the pattern of what consumers want and look for. It is now considered “chic” to wear a Sri Lankan designed outfit.

Being the only South Asian country that represents many international designers from the region, CFW has also now been positioned, and seen as the hub for Spring/Summer resort wear.

Moving from strength to strength since its inception in 2003, HSBC CFW has built a reputable following locally, and internationally. CFW 2012 scheduled for 24, 25 and 26 February, is set to take things to a whole new level.
